December 2009 Newsletter - A Time of Gratitude

We give thanks when our children are born. We give thanks when someone gives us a gift, when someone helps us, and when we have a good time. Yet gratitude can be a daily prayer and not just expressed on one special day or event. We have so much to be thankful for. Even through times of financial lack in this country, we have an opportunity to grow and develop ourselves. Let’s take time for the opportunity of freedom of speech and teaching and learning about natural ways. We can create a healthier environment and a healthier earth by not allowing the corporations, who are running the world, ruin our health. Let’s give thanks for what we can do to change our world and bring more natural ways into our homes and our lives.

Ayurveda is the world’s oldest recorded healing system, used by many thousands of doctors and millions of patients; a system based on prevention and alternative and holistic ways. Ayurvedic theory states that good health is the result of harmony within oneself. To be truly healthy, harmony must exist within our consciousness, our purpose for being, our thoughts, our feelings, and our physical actions. When we work with Nature’s laws, Nature nicely reciprocates.

The earth provided us with everything we need to take care of ourselves. Unfortunately, the earth is no longer in its pristine state due to man’s dominance. The world has moved away from nature. Our food, our water, and our air are filled with man-made chemicals that are damaging to our health. Ayurvedic teachings show us how to create and maintain our health by using the wonderful bounty of nature’s resources which include essential oils, herbs, fresh fruits, vegetables, and spices in our diet. Buying organic is always the best choice.

Ayurvedic teachings, in alignment with Nature’s laws, state that processed foods are to be avoided, overuse of prescription drugs are discouraged, and man-made chemicals or petroleum by-products such as those found in perfumes, inorganic foods, pesticides, and plastic containers are to be avoided. Many believe that because they eat organic foods, they are safe from chemicals; yet our bodies absorb chemicals from the environment on a daily basis. Almost every public place we go, someone is wearing fabric softeners, fragranced laundry detergent (most have fragrance, unless it says “free”), hair spray and gel, hair dye, cosmetics, cologne, and deodorant. We are exposed to chemicals in our daily environment via buildings that have pesticides sprayed in them, chemical janitorial products, floor waxes, bathroom soaps, new carpets, paint, glue, building materials, and compressed wood furniture, just to name a few. These are all toxic and are continually off-gassing into the air. As with cigarettes, second-hand exposure to any chemical is just as harmful as if you are putting it directly into your body.

Although these products are allowed on the market by the FDA and USDA, most have not been declared safe by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). For example, there are 4000 chemicals to choose from to make up one fragrance. Any one fragrance usually contains about 400 chemicals. Of the 4000 chemicals, only 12% have been tested for human health effects – and 80% of those are chemicals that can cause cancer. In addition, the neurological effects (toxic encephalopathy) can culminate into neurological disorders up to three decades later. Parkinson’s disease and dementia are two disorders that may arise from chemical exposure, whether it is long term/low dose or short term/high dose. The olfactory receptors in our nose receive smells from the environment. These receptors are connected to the limbic system and pineal gland (the seat of our intuition” – “sniffing out danger”). The pineal gland has been referred to as the place where the light enters our soul. This gland governs the mental and physical functions of the entire body and is the gateway to where the endocrine and neurological systems cross. The pineal gland is also linked to the hypothalamus gland, which affects the entire endocrine system. Synthetic chemicals are endocrine disruptors, neurological inhibitors, and immune suppressants.

What can we do to protect and heal ourselves from chemical exposure? There are some things you can do right now. Read labels and research any unfamiliar names on the internet to learn their health effects. Educate your friends and family. Limit your contribution to pollution. Use natural non-toxic products in the home (salt, baking soda, essential oils of lemon, orange, tea tree, eucalyptus, cloves, rosemary, and lemongrass) for cleaning or personal use. Imagine cleaning your house with essential oils and at the same time enlivening your body, mind, and spirit. Everything would be clean, non-toxic, and organically fragrant.

It is a time to embrace Peace, Spirit, and Gratitude - and express these same qualities towards everything. We can use this time of gratitude to enhance our health and shine our light to all those who cross our path. As we begin to cultivate gratitude for what we have, changes will occur within our lives and we become more aware of our true power. In a co-creative endeavor, we begin to give a gift to the earth of our true Selves and all the blessings that accompany that Self. Remain vigilant in your gratitude. Become the change you want to see in the world.

During this coming Holiday Season, you may wish to express the holidays with products that enhance health and expand awareness. In choosing a gift of health for your loved ones, we offer natural perfumes, teas, remedies, and more in our online store. Enjoy!
